OUR STORY

The Children’s Indoor Play Society (C.H.I.P.S.) was founded in August 1984—more than 40 years ago—by a group of moms and dads who wanted to create a safe, welcoming place for preschoolers to play and socialize during Alberta’s long winters. Back then, playtime meant hauling toys and equipment into the local drill hall, setting up, and taking everything down again each day. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, C.H.I.P.S. has grown from those humble beginnings into the permanent, vibrant play space you see today.

Over the years, our leadership has shifted from dayhome providers to parents and caregivers in the community who share one common goal: keeping C.H.I.P.S. thriving for families. Today, we’re run by a volunteer board of directors and supported by an incredible network of community volunteers.

But C.H.I.P.S. has always been about more than just “burning off energy.” We believe in learning through play and creating opportunities for children and parents to engage, interact, and make memories together. Along with our open play hours, we host special programs like Wonder Wednesday and Rhyming Tots (in partnership with WCLP), plus a variety of community events. Our birthday parties are legendary—especially our glow parties and movie nights—and our commercial-grade climbers and bouncy house ensure fun for kids of all ages.

As times change, so do we. We’re currently refreshing our programs and offerings to meet the needs of today’s families, while holding onto the spirit that’s kept us going since 1984: a safe, fun, and community-driven space where children can play, grow, and learn. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the support of our members, and the love of our community.
